Camp Kaleidoscope is a family camp administered by Common Ground Center for families with children with autism spectrum disorder. For disabled people from the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) allowed us to access school and other aspects of public life for the first time. Some authors directly acknowledge their privilege in their books, which might include access to education or expensive treatments. Many books by disabled authors creatively blur format, incorporating visual art, diary entries, medical records, or literary analysis. Disabled authors may also reclaim slurs or depict incidents of ableism verbatim. Some of these were once medical terms and are presented in their historical context.
