I would only eat the bossy little roosters, the hens are too docile and sweet, and make fabulous mothers. My husband wants to make Silkie Soup, but we haven't tried it yet. I raise Silkies in my backyard! They are wonderful, cute and sweet little things. ) As for the blue, I think that was just the light/flash from the camera. Just say that the braising liquid turned it dark. They're just a specific breed of chicken just the way they are. don't think anything turns their skin black. But, maybe you can tell people that it's the soy sauce that turned the chicken into that color. I don't like it coz it tastes like medicine to me, haha. Mama's recipe for the soup is just to add "See But" (Four "but"). Although, one time, Yaya brought back some live chickens from her province and we ate those. Wow! Live chickens! We didn't really buy live chickens back then. Not that I know chickens, but I think silkies may be the only black ones around. We get them from our Chinese supermarket (T&T) and they're usually frozen. I still haven't developed a taste for those. I think I don't like the soup version is because our mother puts those "Chinese medicine" type ingredients. I don't know if it's the chicken itself, or if it's because of the ginger. Try it! Would love to see how it turns out. =) Perhaps if not in this form, our silkie will turn out. We almost exclusively make this dish when we have silkies, so I don't know what other dishes to make with them. The silkie soup doesn't really make an appearance. Find more details and the round-up at Joelen's blog: Joelen's Culinary Adventures. We're submitting this to the Chinese edition of Joelen's Wine & Dine event. Serve with said rice and lots of the braising liquid. Needless to say, sometime during the braising period you would've put some white rice to cook in a rice cooker. The usual braising technique applies: Bring the liquid up to the boil then immediately put the pot on the lowest heat, cover and walk away. (Soy paste can be omitted if hard to find.) Let's say that the "sweating" takes about 10 minutes.Īfter the sweating, the braising liquids go in. Then, my mother covers the pot and lets the chicken sweat a bit with the wine. In goes about a capful of shao xing wine. When the ginger starts to slightly brown, the silkie is added. This sesame oil and ginger combination is the base for Mama's Silkie Chicken. Now being used to this "food blogging", our mother patiently goes through each step, posing each ingredient. A bird usually weighs about a pound to a pound and a half. In Vancouver, they are usually priced at $8.99 and above each. Silkie chickens are available frozen in most Asian supermarkets. Besides, we never have a problem with "chewy" silkies when Mama cooks them this way. For me, it tastes like chicken, a tad chewier than "regular" chicken perhaps, but it tastes like a good free-range chicken does. Some have noted that the meat of the silkie chicken might be a tad gamey, but I've never perceived it to be so. The ginger pieces are sauteed in sesame oil, which adds a profound nutty richness to the dish. Sometimes we have silkie chicken in soup, but I prefer to have them in this form, braised in a mixture of soy sauce and ever-reliable water, with lots and lots of ginger. I've never actually seen one myself (I've only seen them in their unfeathered incarnations), but our mother, apparently, had even caught insects to feed to these chickens in her childhood and youth! One of her schoolmates had silkies they bred in the backyard for food. What's interesting about them are the feathers are usually white, so you have a chicken that's white outside with black skin and meat underneath. Silkie chickens are so called because their feathers are said to have a silky texture. Basically, it's another one of our mother's one-pot, no-measure, ultra-forgiving wonders. One of the chicken dishes I look forward to is our mother's silkie chicken stew. But if you're looking for something a little cheaper, choose the AmazonBasics Heavy-Duty Broom. Plus, it comes with a dustpan and can stand upright for storage. Our top pick is the Yanxus Broom and Dustpan Set, because of it has soft, yet sturdy bristles. The bristles aren’t sturdy enough for tough jobs like picking up leaves, wood chips, or sticks.īroom Width: 10.4 inches | Handle Length: 52 inches | Weight: 3 pounds | Handle Material: Metal | Bristle Type: Not listed If there’s any downside, it’s that this broom is really meant for indoor use. The broom and dustpan also snap together and stand upright without support for easy storage in a corner or a closet. It has built-in teeth, so you can effortlessly scrape hair and dust bunnies out of the bristles. And, unlike many other brooms, it comes with a dustpan that has a wide-mouth collection pan with a grippy rubber lip to ensure no debris gets left behind or swept underneath. This multi-surface cleaning companion has a long 52-inch handle and a wide 10-inch brush head that can be used on a wide variety of surfaces, including hardwood, bamboo, tile, vinyl, laminate, and linoleum. It won't come with a dustpan, either. Still, we think it's a handy classic broom to sweep up messes in and out.īroom Width: 8 inches | Handle Length: 56 inches | Weight: 2.29 pounds | Handle Material: Wood | Bristle Type: Flagged If there’s any downside, it’s that the height may be a bit too tall for some-and the handle isn’t adjustable. The 56-inch wooden handle is reinforced with wires for added strength. How exactly does it work so well? The bristles are 100 percent broomcorn, a stiff, straw-like fiber that picks up dust or debris particles with minimal effort. The natural bristles are exceptionally heavy-duty-ideal for those tougher cleaning jobs both indoors and outdoors, like sweeping up leaves, a dusty garage, or your kitchen floor. But don’t sleep on this style, especially for places like garages or patios with concrete floors. The corn broom from O-Cedar is what you envision when you think about traditional brooms. But once you get it all sorted, you’ll have a cleaning tool you can rely on for dry messes both big and small.īroom Width: 11.2 inches | Handle Length: 52 inches | Weight: 3.25 pounds | Handle Material: Plastic | Bristle Type: Unflagged bristles The broom does also require some initial assembly that can be a bit perplexing. Just note: Because the dust pan is so wide, some users report difficulty emptying the pan into the garbage, particularly if they’re garbage is housed in a narrow pantry. Once it’s time to empty the dustpan, you’ll be impressed by the built-in comb teeth that make it easy to remove even the toughest messes-like hair!-out of the bristles. You can get the whole job done while standing, and because it’s only 3.25 pounds, you won’t tire as quickly during bigger jobs. The Yanxus broom and dustpan set is our top pick because the 52-inch broom has an impressively wide 11.2-inch brush head packed with four layers of soft and flexible, yet sturdy bristles that effortlessly sweep up everything in its path: hair, dirt, dust, and crumbs. Next, prepare the hills in advance with an abundance of old manure dug deep into the ground-about 13 inches.Doing so also tends to help with drainage and pest control. With these small “hills,” the soil will warm more quickly and the seeds will germinate much faster. Carefully sow seeds 6 to 12 inches apart in rows that are 6 to 12 feet apart in rows that are the size of small pitcher mounds.Keep in mind that the optimum soil temperature for growing pumpkins is typically around 95 degrees Fahrenheit and pumpkins are extremely sensitive to the cold. Wait until the plant soil reaches a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit or more before sowing the seeds. If your growing season is particularly short, it is recommended that you first plant your seeds indoors in peat pots about two to four weeks before the last spring frost. The tips located toward the bottom of the list are also applicable to planting seedlings. If you do choose to plant seeds over seedlings, follow the tips below. It is generally recommended that you opt for seedlings, as they are vastly easier to grow. Your next step is to either purchase pumpkin seedlings or pumpkin seeds from your local nursery. Mixing composts and manure into the planting site before sowing your seedlings is a great way to ensure your plants will be provided with all the nutrients they need to grow big and tall. Make sure the soil you lay down is well-drained and not too soggy. It is important to note that pumpkins require nutrient-rich soil-and a lot of it-as their large size tends to foster an even larger appetite for fresh soil. You can also grow pumpkins in a large 5- to 10-gallon bucket if need be. If your garden space is limited, don’t fret! Planting pumpkins at the edge of your garden will allow you to direct vine growth across your lawn with ease. Try to pick a site with full sun and lots of space for sprawling vines. To begin your pumpkin-growing process, you should first consider where exactly you are going to plant your seedlings. Listed below is a comprehensive guideline on how to successfully plant and grow your own pumpkins! What many people don’t realize is that growing pumpkins in your vegetable garden is fairly simple as long as you know what the plants require and follow the steps carefully.
